Detailed instructions before and after Hair Transplant

At Nova Medical Hair Transplant in NJ, we provide all our patients with detailed instructions before and after surgery

For many people, the steps to follow and what to watch for can seem confusing or overwhelming. Rest assured, there aren’t many complex instructions to follow while you recover, but when and how to wash your hair post-procedure, is important. Because the quality of your transplant results depend on your surgeon and on how you care for your hair, it’s a great idea to review the guidelines.

NJ hair transplant post procedure

You’ll need to wait two days before washing your hair after your transplant. You can shower regularly, but you’ll need to keep the scalp dry. That could mean using a shower cap or take baths. There are specialized topical creams and lotions designed for post-procedure comfort. Many of these soothe itching and numb your sensation. Ask your surgeon what you can safely apply. You’ll have strict instructions to avoid swimming, hot tubs and any water submersion during the crucial, early stages.

On day 3, NJ hair transplant patients can begin washing their hair, but specialized techniques are advised. Any heavy pressure, scratching or scrubbing at this point would be detrimental to the grafts. With a little shampoo and gentle fingertip lather, you can wash and rinse. Avoid putting your head directly under the showerhead, especially if you have strong water pressure. You can fill a cup or container and pour water over your scalp to rinse it.

Ask your surgeon if you can add conditioner to help moisturize the area. After the first few days, the tiny holes created at the extraction site will close. One of the symptoms of healing incisions is an itching sensation so the application of conditioner can help soften, moisturize and relieve discomfort.

After the first 7 days, most of the scabs formed at incisions sites should have fallen off. Gently massaging the areas with conditioner and warm water will remove any remaining scabs at that time. You’ll be free to resume regular washing, swimming or any other activities you want roughly 10 days post procedure.

1-2 months after your surgery

Once the grafts have healed, the transferred hairs may begin to fall out, and this can be concerning for people. It’s completely normal, and your follicles will remain healthy and growing fresh new hairs to replace them. You’ll start to see thin, new hair sprout roughly 1-2 months after your surgery.

Your hair transplant surgeon can recommend specialized shampoos and topical treatments designed to improve blood flow and feed the scalp with concentrated nutrients. You can wash and style your hair as you usually would once it grows in. There’s no need to be overly delicate in the long run, just for the first week.
Enjoy your new locks and your new look!
