How Many Treatments Will You Need?

Undergoing a surgical procedure- no matter how minimally invasive- can come with high costs and a lot to consider.

Hair transplant in NJ now have a faster recovery rate than ever before, and they are virtually scarless. If you’ve been reading about your options and you think this could be your solution, your next question may be, ‘how many treatments will I need?’

NJ Hair Transplant Consultation

It’s not unusual to spend months researching your hair restoration options before making a plan to proceed. One of the crucial first steps on your journey will be to meet with a hair transplant surgeon in person for a consultation. This is the stage where your hair density, donor hair availability and your whole medical picture are discussed in detail. When your surgeon has a clearer picture of your hair loss progression and your goals, they’ll be able to advise you about specific graft numbers.

The transplant is usually a one-time procedure, but not all procedures or patients are alike. Here are a few factors to consider:

Which Transplant Technique Will You Use?

The strip method (FUT) utilizes an excised strip of scalp from the back of the head to dissect multiple grafts, then transplant them.

The second technique which has become more common today is called FUE. Hair grafts are individually punched with a tiny, rotary device and removed manually or with pneumatic pressure.

The number of grafts you need and the method you choose will affect your decision to have an additional session at a later time. That’s because high volumes using 2500+ grafts are possible using FUT but less likely with FUE. If you have severe balding and want the FUE method and avoid a linear scar, you may have to complete your transformation in two separate sessions.

When hair loss is in the beginning stage, fewer grafts are required than for a person whose crown is completely bald.

What Can Be Achieved With A One-Time Procedure?

Male pattern baldness follows a predictable pattern, leaving relatively dense hair growth at the back and sides of the head. These hairs tend to be naturally resistant to DHT- the hormone responsible for balding. The hair back there is referred to as ‘donor’ hair. It’s convenient for FUE methods that the hair there is resistant to shedding and grows densely because it can be extracted with tiny, 1mm punches in a randomized pattern and not show visible depletion. As well, those grafts will be robust and immune to the effects of DHT which means they’ll stay where grafted. Hairs will continue to grow in their new location indefinitely, masking a hair transplant permanent.

You Won’t Need to Repeat The Same Transplant

NJ hair transplant clients will sometimes have a procedure when they’re young, then return a decade or two later for a ‘fill in’ procedure. They aren’t replacing the original grafts, but as the hair loss progression continues for nativestrands, there may be gaps or spaces that open up surrounding those implants. Because androgenic alopecia is progressive, maintenance procedures may be required.
